For Alastair the first change was that he had to give up his caring role because he was ill for a couple of months. He was ashamed that he found it such a relief not to have to continue doing what he had undertaken to do. However, he later found it disconcerting when other people took up the reins and replaced him very quickly.

Imagine my surprise when other people appeared out of the woodwork and started doing things for Adrian. My cousin even started to take him to the shops and got him to do his own shopping. It turned out that he was able to take himself down to a café for cooked meals whenever he felt like it. I was annoyed with him for not making a bigger effort before and I was sort of jealous of my cousin. Why had he not helped earlier? Also, bizarrely, I found myself feeling that my cousin was trying to replace me in my uncle’s affection. I know it doesn’t make any sense. But I felt bad. I thought I was essential, and I was so very quickly replaced. (Alastair)
